Evelyne Huytebroeck, the Brussels Minister of Environment and Tourism, last January launched a call to designers to participate in the third ParckDesign competition.
By way of reminder, the aim of this competition is to encourage designers to imagine and conceive of innovative urban furniture to be placed in three green spaces in the city.
50 proposals have been submitted. The tendency for an international interest in this competition has continued: submissions have been received from the Netherlands, France, Germany and even Poland.
From Tuesday, 11 March until Wednesday, 19 March at 12 noon, the public at large can choose the proposal they prefer and make comments on the website www.parckdesign.be.
By replying to the questions on green spaces in Brussels, visitors to the website can also win a copy of the book on the 2007 edition of ParckDesign.
The winning proposal will be implemented and placed alongside the four other prototypes chosen by the professional jury.
This third edition of the competition emphasises the urban context in which the prototypes are to be placed. The pieces are to be installed on 10 July in the forecourt of the Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula, the Putterie square (Central Station) and in the garden of the Albertine (Mont des Arts).
While waiting to try out the 2008 prototypes, photos of previous creations and information can be seen in the ParckDesign display windows at the entrance to the Galerie de la Reine.
The nine proposals selected during the 2006 and 2007 competitions delighted passers-by, and may still be admired at the ‘Jardins du Fleuriste’ park in Laeken (entrance via Sobieski Park or Avenue des Robiniers).

The aim of the competition is to encourage designers to imagine and conceive of innovative urban furniture to be placed in three green spaces in the city centre. The three projects chosen last year delighted passers-by and are on display at the ‘Jardins du Fleuriste’ park in Laeken.
Over the long term, the Parckdesign project hopes to foster a creative dynamism of high quality in the conception and prototyping of urban furniture in Belgium as well as to ensure that the project achieves international repute.
This third edition emphasises the urban context in which the prototypes are intended to be placed: in the forecourt of the Saint Michael and St Gudula Cathedral, the Putterie square (Central Station) and the Albertine square (Mont des Arts).
The call for entries is addressed to professionals (Belgian industrial designers, architects, town planners, interior designers and visual artists) as well as to non-professionals (in particular, students in schools of art, design and architecture).
At the end of April 2008, 4 proposals will be chosen by an international jury made up of professionals, and 1 proposal will be chosen by the public through an electronic vote. The inauguration of the furniture will take place on 10 July 2008. The selection criteria focus primarily on how well the objects fit in with the proposed sites and on the choice of materials.
The Brussels Region has entrusted the organisation of this competition to Designed in Brussels and Recyclart.
To participate: send your dossier by 19 February 2008 at 17h to the attention of Axel Demonty, Bruxelles Environnement, Division des Espaces Verts, Gulledelle, 100 -1200 Brussels.
